Bengal kitten development: from birth to arrival at home

The development of a Bengal kitten is a fascinating period, both behaviorally and physically. In addition to its growth, its coat is constantly evolving, gradually revealing the beauty of its pattern.

At Misha Bengal, we carefully monitor each stage to raise balanced, docile, and visually exceptional kittens, especially in our “Shepherd” marbled line.

🐾 0 to 2 weeks: The neonatal period
✔️ General development:
• Eyes closed
• Complete dependence on the mother
🐆 Coat development:
• Very short coat, already marked
• Patterns (marbled or spotted) are visible but still subtle
• Colors are often darker than in adulthood
👉 The pattern’s potential is already present, but still subtle.

👀 2 to 4 weeks: Awakening
✔️ Development:
• Eyes open
• First movements
🐆 Coat:
• Patterns begin to become slightly more defined
• Contrast remains low
• Appearance of a slight fuzzy effect

🐾 4 to 6 weeks: Primary socialization
✔️ Development:
• Play with other kittens
• Start of solid food
🐆 Coat: Beginning of the “fuzzy” stage
• The fur becomes thicker and less defined
• Patterns become less visible
• Contrast temporarily decreases
👉 This is a normal phase called the “fuzzy stage”
💬 Many people think the kitten “loses” its pattern… but it’s temporary!

🐆 6 to 8 weeks: Exploration and personality
✔️ Development:
• Very active
• Curious
🐆 Coat:
The fuzzy phase is often at its peak (The “fuzzy” phase is essential to understand:
it’s part of normal development and prepares for the emergence of an exceptional coat.)
• Patterns may appear blurred or dull
• The “shepherd” pattern may appear less defined at this stage
👉 This is the least representative period of future beauty.

💉 8 to 12 weeks: Transformation
✔️ Development:
• Vaccination
• Advanced socialization
🐆 Coat: Emerging from fuzzy
• The fur begins to lighten
• Patterns gradually reappear
• Contrast increases
👉 We begin to see the kitten’s true potential

🏡 12 to 16 weeks: Revealing before leaving
✔️ Development:
• Emotional stability
• Learning completed
🐆 Coat:
• The pattern becomes sharper and more defined
• Appearance of glitter
• The “shepherd” pattern shows:
its structure
its harmony
its unique character
👉 Each kitten becomes visually distinct and impressive

✨ After 16 weeks: Continued evolution
• The coat continues to change to evolve up to 2 years and beyond
• The contrast intensifies
• The colors become richer
• The pattern stabilizes completely
